Q: What Is The Abomination Of Desolation?

Q: Dr. Mike, when you teach the Book of Revelation, I hear you mentioning the “Abomination of Desolation;” what is it?

A: Good question: and thanks for attending the Revelation seminars that we’ve conducted over the past several years. I’m glad to see the interest in the study, but more so grateful to see the saints, not shy away from studies in the Book of Revelation. For so long, have Believers approached me before our studies, and had literally said, “I avoid the Book of Revelation, because of all those symbols in it and some pretty scary stuff! Usually I’d smile and say, “Isn’t it amazing that God stated in Chapter 1:3, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” In the first chapter, Jehovah [God] seals the book with a blessing to the reader and hearer!

This phrase “abomination of desolation” is found in the Old Testament Book of Daniel 9, and the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). In Matthew 24:15, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:).”

Down through the annals of history, there has been fore-runners of the Antichrist committing early signs of this despicable act. For example, The Syrian King Antiochus Epiphanes set up an idol in the Jewish Temple for them to worship. It was stated that he slaughtered thousands of Jewish men, sold many of their wives and children into slavery, and sought to annihilate the Jewish religion. He went as far as to desecrate the Temple by sacrificing the most unclean animal (a pig), on the altar and forcing the priests to eat its flesh.

The fulfilment of the abomination of desolation will be when the Antichrist take charge of a confederacy of ten (European) nations (many Bible scholars see as the revive Roman Empire of Daniel Chapter 7, where it talks about, “And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.”). In Revelation Chapter 6, where we see the introduction to the “Seven Years Tribulation Period,” the rider of the White horse is the Antichrist, because he as a bow and no arrow, which represents ‘false peace,’ and the first 3-1/2 year of the Tribulation Period; where he will pretend to be Israel’s deliverer from her enemies. And Daniel 9:27, talks about Israel making an alliance with the Antichrist: but after he is victorious over the nations of the world who will come against Israel, then he will reveal his true evil identity of his hatred for Israel and her God, while committing the “abomination of desolation, as expressed in Daniel 11:40-45.
