QUALITIES OF A CHRISTIAN COUNSELOR
By: Mike Jones
As you view this list of qualities of a Christian counselor, keep in mind that this is not a measuring stick of qualifications because, as stated in earlier chapters, no one is perfect except Christ, Himself. Christian counseling is a privilege, and the list below should be used in preparation and as an objective moving forward to help bring deliverance to the counselee.
- Born again – “Jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
- Holy Ghost filled – “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)
- Operating in Spiritual gifts – “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)
- Operating in the fruit of the Spirit – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Operating/walking in the Love of God – “Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father.” (1 Thessalonians 1:3)
- Operating/walking in the spirit – “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1)
- Seeing Jesus in Operation – “Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have, give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6)
- Well-versed in scripture – “All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thouroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
- Active in a local church – “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
- Judge nothing or no one before time – “Who are you who judges another man’s servent? To his own master he stands or falls. Yes, he shall be held up: for God is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4)
- Sold out to the Lord and His works – “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor Angels, nor principalities, nor power, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39-39)
- (Willing) and Obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit – “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, Will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
- Apt to forgive others – “And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)
- Effective prayer life – “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16)
- Effective Evangelism – “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an Evangelist, make full proof of your ministry.” (2 Timothy 6:5)
- Sound mindedness – “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
- Desire to put others first – “Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth (good).” (1 Corinthians 10:24)
- Not easily provoked – “Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself; is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)
- Always seek to speak the truth in love – “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15)
- Tries hard not to interject his/her own opinion into the session – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- Not willing to render evil for evil – “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one for another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous; not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that you are there unto called, that you should inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9)
There are a host of others that can be mentioned, such as: don’t take sides in the discussions; when you rule, don’t second guess yourself; be patient, quick to hear and slow to speak; and when the sessions are over, give all the glory to God for His presence in the session, and the knowledge to rule faithfully and successfully, using scripture as the foundation for your decisions.
