Q: Proverbs 6 talks about the 7 Things the Lord Hates: can you explain what the text meant by, “Feet that are swift in running to mischief?”

A: As many sinful acts that there are, in the world, King Solomon (the writer of Proverbs) could have given us many other sins the Lord hates, but those seven give us enough of a complete picture of how God view evil.

‘Feet that are swift in running to mischief,’ is the fifth thing the Lord hates, in that series. One Christian writer made a humorous jester concerning a person running to mischief. He said, “This is a person with Hoof and Mouth Disease, better known as GOSSIP.”

Some people do get a delight out of running and telling what they know, or think they know, about someone else to make them look good. When the Bible says, “Confess your faults one to another (James 5:16) Bear ye one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2) and Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted (Gal. 6:2) and Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted (Gal. 6:1).” These verses are making reference to a mature Christian coming alongside to aid the person with a shortcoming in their life. (The thing a CARNAL Christian fail to realize the Bible says, “Whatsoever a person sows, that shall they reap.”

The Bible describes the fate that awaits such a sinful person, in Isaiah 59:7-8, “Their feet run to do evil, and they rush to commit murder. They think only about sinning. Misery and destruction always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace or what it means to be just and good. They have mapped out crooked roads, and no one who follows them knows a moment’s peace.”

The Apostle Paul hates this type of person so much, he says in Romans 3:9-18, “Are we better than they that have fallen short of God’s mark for their lives? Not in this life because we all have shortcomings that we’re working with the Holy Spirit to perfect. There’s none righteous, no, not ONE! He goes on to say, the reason you’re like this is because you either have no personal relationship with God or you’re not seeking after His heart to know His wisdom in every situation. And if neither of these reasons are being corrected, it’s obvious YOU HAVE NO DESIRE TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT!

You can know if you’re truly guilty of running to mischief if someone does you wrong, or speaks evil of you and you immediately lash back at them, or an opportunity presents itself for you to cheat on a project and gain the upper hand. Remember, I’ve told you that Christian character is exemplified when you have an opportunity to do wrong because no one is watching, and you still do the right thing.

Looking at these statistics, we can understand why America is in the shape that it’s in.

Based on the 2017 CRIME CLOCK STATISTICS:

  • A violent crime occurred every 24.6 seconds
  • One murder every 30.5 minutes
  • One forcible rape every 3.9 minutes
  • One robbery every 1.7 minutes
  • One aggravated assault every 39.0 seconds
  • A property crime occurred every 4.1 seconds
  • One burglary every 22.6 seconds

Though it may seem as those committing wrongful deeds are getting away, that is not the case. Man may fail to hold them accountable but, WE ALL have to stand before God in judgement. I believe we shall reap what we sow! A life of sorrow, disappointment, hardship, poverty etc.etc. may be the just reward of those committing the wrongful deeds. The word can’t lie and no one is getting away with anything. We may not see it but, that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
