Q: Dr. Mike, is God concerned with the material well-being of Christians, knowing that He promised us a roof over our heads, food on our tables, and clothes on our backs?
A: I will answer this question with an emphatically YES! We could say that He is concerned about the material well-being of the entire world, because of all the natural resources here on earth as part of His creation. And He then created man with material needs. In the New Testament Jesus constantly taught His disciples that they were to care for those who were hungry, poor, naked, homeless, etc., as He talked about wealth and poverty and the condition of people’s hearts. His main concern was for Christians not to become so preoccupied with the accumulation of wealth that we miss the Kingdom of God. We can determine this by His statement in Matthew 6:25-33, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink…but seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” What we’re seeing in the Christian world are the extremists: some saying God only cares about spiritual matters and others saying that God wants Christians RICH!
